Lincoln derives from the Roman Lindum Colonia — 'lake fort/colony' — the name of a town in Roman Britain. As a place name it refers to the city in England, and as a surname it became associated with America's most revered president. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president, preserved the Union, abolished slavery, and was assassinated while attending the theatre — his life the great American tragedy and triumph. The TV series Prison Break's Michael Scofield saving his brother Lincoln renewed its cultural prominence.
