Caleb comes from the Hebrew Kaleb, most likely meaning 'dog' in the sense of loyal, devoted companion — the faithful dog as a symbol of wholehearted dedication. In the Bible, Caleb was one of twelve spies sent to scout Canaan; only Caleb and Joshua gave a faithful, courageous report while the others cowered. As a reward, Caleb was one of only two adults from the Exodus generation allowed to enter the Promised Land. His name became a byword for courageous, faithful loyalty.
